Konstantin Paleologos was the last Byzantine Emperor and ruled from 1449 until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. He was born in 1405 and was the son of Manuel II Palaiologos. Konstantin was a capable ruler, diplomat, and military commander but was unfortunate to preside over the final years of the Byzantine Empire, which was in a state of decline following a series of devastating defeats by the Ottoman Turks.
In the spring of 1453, Ottoman forces laid siege to Constantinople. Konstantin attempted to rally the city's defenders and personally led a sally against the Ottoman encampments. Despite Byzantine resistance, the Ottomans finally breached the city’s defenses on May 29, 1453. During the final assault, Konstantin fought bravely alongside his troops and is said to have died fighting on the walls. His fate has been a subject of legend and romanticized historical accounts, and his death marked the end of the Byzantine Empire.
